This stunning Scottish wool tartan arisaidh revives the spirit of ancient Scotland's Highland women. The arisaidh was the elegant and practical choice for the woman who lived and worked in the beautiful green highlands of Scotland. over a millenia ago. The arisiadh was worn belted around the waist and the extra fabric could be pinned at the breast and worn up as a hood to keep warm in the rain and cold. The excess could also be rolled and tied about the waist or tucked into the belt in warmer weather and to keep it from interfering with chores. It also provided lots of 'pockets' to perhaps stash a spindle and wool or herbs gathered from the fields.

Just as ancient in Scottish tradition is the Scottish léine. This roomy chemise was made of up to 20 yards of white or sapphron linen (for those who could afford it) and worn under the arisaidh. It's a perfect garment to wear alone at the end of the day as a night shirt too! The Scottish woman's léine was marked by the large bag sleeves that draped each side, a functional feature that allowed the woman to store needful items or food gathered in the fields.
