This stunning Scottish wool tartan arisaidh is truly one-of-a-kind and inspired by the 14th century highlander woman’s arisaidh. The arisaidh is elegant and practical and favored by the woman who lived and worked in the beautiful green highlands of Scotland. It was worn belted around the waist and the extra fabric could be pinned at the breast and worn up as a hood to keep warm in the rain and cold. The excess could also be rolled and tied about the waist or tucked into the belt in warmer weather and to keep it from interfering with chores. It also provided lots of 'pockets' to perhaps stash a spindle and wool or herbs gathered from the fields.
The stay (or bodice) is made from durable twill fabric and is fully lined. Boning in the front offers essential support, but the sides remain un-boned for maximum comfort and mobility.
The chemise has a classic style and is roomy and comfortable. It makes the perfect nightgown! A simple, full skirt in your choice of color is also included. The bodice and skirt are made to your measurements, and we will send you an email with clear instructions on how to provide the measurements we need after your order has been received. So just choose a general size when selecting for your bodice.
The early period Lady Morrigan Ensemble below includes one 4 yard arisaidh (60 inches wide), one 2 panel peasant skirt, one full-length natural (cream) or bleached (white) Lady Rose muslin chemise and one durable cotton twill stay (bodice).
