Celts of the Highlands, lowlands and Éire have been wearing the Great Kilt and its variations for centuries. The great kilt or feileadh mór (big wrap) offered the Scotsman versatility by being a garment, sleeping bag and a protection against inclement weather. By tucking and folding the excess material around the waist and pinning at the chest, pockets were created to hold personal items that probably included anything from bread and cheese to game from a hunt. How the kilt was worn was a matter of comfort and practicality.
The ancient Great Kilt was made on a 30" wide loom from as much as 8 yards or more of tartan. At 60" wide, our standard great kilt is constructed of a more manageable 4 yard length. Our model is 6’2” and has plenty of tartan to work with (extra yardage is available below).
All our tartans are made in the highest quality 100% wool, woven and dyed in Scotland, and registered with the Scottish Tartans Authority. Each tartan is finished with beautiful fringes on either end of the fabric.
IMPORTANT: the great kilt does NOT have pre-sewn pleats (please search the web for 'short tartan kilts' for pre-pleated garments). Unlike the 'feilidh-beag' (short kilt) our great kilt must be pleated by the wearer each time they don the kilt, just as it was done anciently. Complete folding and care instructions are included with every kilt purchase!
Our traditional Scottish tunic is threaded at the neck with a leather thong through durable grommets. The sleeves measure about 21” long from the underarm seam to hem, and the shoulders are wide and roomy. The length from back of the neck to bottom hem is 48” long and is made to fit the measurements you provide.
Our Scottish tam o'shanter has been a house favorite for over a decade and is the perfect way to complete your Celtic/Scottish ensemble! The removable tartan ribbon (also known as a cockade) that adorns each of our tams is the crowning touch. Each one is carefully handmade, completely unique and is embellished with a high quality Celtic button. Our tams are made from a high-quailty, easy care linen or linen blend fabric and fully lined in quality satin
Subject to availability of wool! Although we are rarely out of stock, if you have any questions about wool availability please e-mail us.
